The Sonus Radiogram

Inheriting the original 1967 HMV radiogram from my grandfather, I wanted to repurpose it, giving it a new lease of life. As this is my first piece of furniture I tried to incorporate as many techniques of woodworking into the player as possible, thereby giving me the most rounded education from my course at The Chippendale international school of furniture.

This includes CNC, lasering, veneering, laminations, turning, waterfalled mitred edges and introducing fuming to half of the spiral design whilst leaving the other side natural.

The electrical components were in need of repair so I found an expert, delivered the radiogram along with a reverse jig to be retrofitted to in order to make sure that any alterations would accommodate the new carcase.

The laminated speaker horns are both functional and aesthetic considering the grain direction to mimic sound leaving the unit and also to actually project the sound out.

 

The Windsor Desk

Elm & Ash

A contemporary writing desk made of wych elm and ash features curved drawers and a shelf, with turned wedged-through tenons and a steam-bent crinoline. The desk includes ash doweling drawer runners and stops.

Influenced by the Windsor chair, particularly the Windsor rocker I crafted with fellow students during my course, this desk pays homage to that established design. My goal was to repurpose the crinoline as a footrest for someone in a swivel office chair, allowing a purchase point for feet at any rotation. Additionally, the crinoline enhances the design and structure of the piece.

Using ash doweling as the drawer runners is another prominent feature of this desk. I aimed to minimize hardware to let the wood speak for itself, a concept echoed in the exposed joinery and the gnarly figuring of the wych elm.

Built for form and function, the desk has a raised shelf ideal for a dual monitor setup, with drawers and cavity space underneath for storage. The open-backed cavity space is designed to accommodate wires.
